Born in Japan, I have now been living in Denver for over 45 years. With everyone’s support, Aikido Nippon Kan has grown into a large, stable organization headquartered in Denver. Since Aikido Nippon Kan Dojo opened it’s doors in 1978, over 30,000 beginning students have taken beginner Aikido classes and over 10,000 school children from Denver and the front range have seen Aikido demonstrations at Nippon Kan on cultural fieldtrip tours.
As for me, I was the last uchideshi (live-in student) to the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba at the Aiki Shrine in Iwama, Japan. The philosophy, teaching and tradition of the Founder I have faithfully carried forward for over 50 years.
One of the teachings of the Founder I have always kept with me is, “Do not teach Budo, if you are worried about your komebitsu”. (komebitsutranslates as rice bowl-food for survival or more generally livelihood). In other words, if you are teaching Aikido as your only means to earn a living, it can hamper or distort true teaching.
Aikido Nippon Kan is a large, stable organization and does not rely on income from our students for survival. Any dojo has overhead expenses however; therefore all students contribute a small fee to cover utilities and other maintenance expenses.
Our 1hour 15 minute, 6-week, 18-class Beginning Aikido courses have remained $65.00 for over 35 years. There is no other dojo that offers such a complete and extensive course for such a low price.
This year, I would like to extend our offer on a very special opportunity to new students interested in exploring the traditional Japanese art of Aikido at Nippon Kan. For 2016 our Beginning Aikido Course will be offered for $35.00; the same course, 18 class-6 week class structure.
Usually a cheap price means cheap quality. Aikido Nippon Kan is unique in the fact that it’s stability and focus on community service, education and humanitarian outreach allows us the ability to offer this opportunity to all new students who are interested in Beginning Aikido classes.
It is my mission and my hope that many will take advantage of this opportunity and come to enjoy the experience offered at Aikido Nippon Kan.
Aikido Nippon Kan is an independent dojo that purposefully does not have any branch or satellite dojos in the United States. All dojos are not alike, and there is no place as unique as Aikido Nippon Kan. Nippon Kan has founded the Aikido Humanitarian Active Network that has built and supports over 7 orphanages and learning centers throughout Asia and has served over 89,500 meals to those in need in Denver in over 27 years.
