Early morning, Homma Kancho making lunches for children’s fieldtrip

Every year between January and June, Nippon Kan receives about 2000 elementary school children from the Denver School system to study Japanese culture. On these fieldtrips, students are treated to a guided tour of the dojo, museum and gardens, watch aikido and calligraphy demonstrations and try their hand at the Japanese art of Origami and the Japanese ball and stick game of kendama. The tour ends at Domo Restaurant where they are treated to a Japanese “bento” box lunch. The fee for these tours is $10.00 per person, $7.00 of which is donated to AHAN to support ongoing world-wide humanitarian assistance programs.

These Japanese cultural fieldtrips are organized by AHAN International Director Emily Busch and volunteer Nippon Kan staff.

The lunches are most popular on these tours and Homma Kancho and Domo staff sometimes prepare over 150 lunches for a single tour! To date about 25,000 Denver school children have visited Nippon Kan, and I was one of those visitors when I was in elementary school! Now I study at a university in Denver and enjoy helping with the fieldtrips for the next generations to come.
