Preparations begin at 10:00 am for the evening meal service

This year is the 22nd year that Homma Kancho and Nippon Kan volunteer staff have served meals monthly at the Denver Rescue Mission in Denver. The Denver Rescue Mission has been serving the homeless in Denver for 120 years, providing shelter, meals, medical attention and job skill training to encourage independence and stability for generations of those in need.

This year, we estimate that Nippon Kan will reach the milestone of serving 70,000 meals through our monthly meal service at the Denver Rescue Mission. Homma Kancho who has lead this project since its inception remarks, “When I run in the mornings, I sometimes run near the areas where many of the homeless camp and it seems I have many fans! Many of our homeless guests at the mission come out to greet me and they have a variety of ideas about who I am. I am sometimes referred to as the Korean guy who cooks Chinese food and speaks Japanese and sometimes it is vice versa!

In the 22 years we have been serving at the mission, we have seen many generations of staff and administrators change at all levels. Sometimes new coordinators introduce new operational rules and guidelines that do more to confuse than to streamline operations, but all in all our dinner service systems have run smoothly with over two decades of experience behind us.

It is a challenge to provide and serve over 300 meals every month with ever changing rules and conditions, but we can handle it, and will continue this service as long as there is a need and it is appreciated.
