 Hometown markets of Izmir

Homma Kancho made a quick trip to Izmir on his way back from teaching a seminar in Morocco. The reason he told us was that he wanted to enjoy springtime in Izmir! Since Homma Kancho is the owner and head chef of Domo restaurant, he was very interested in going to the weekly morning markets. Marveling at the variety of fresh foods available he noted, “You need very little seasoning when cooking with ingredients as fresh as these!”

Although invitations to teach were offered by local Aikido instructors in Izmir, Homma Kancho excused himself this time. This trip was meant for some well deserved rest and personal time and he spent many hours playing with my son. He enjoyed the four days he spent in Izmir, just being, as he said, a “regular old man”.

In the car on back to the airport, Homma Kancho said, “There are 6 dojos in Izmir that do not have any connection to each other or any roots for their dojos.  If you throw a stone in Izmir, it will hit an Aikido instructor! Teaching Aikido in this kind of environment will only take your strength.

Reported July 25th, 2013    Joining the Army

In Turkey, all men are obligated to serve in the military. It is my turn now and I am now preparing to join the Army in August. I will do my best to be a tough soldier.
