It was quiet, beautiful and a bit nippy in Washington Park at 8:00 on October 13th, as Nippon Kan students began to gather for the project ahead. For the past 23 years, Nippon Kan students have worked on this annual project with the Denver Parks Department; turning the park flower beds for winter. The flowers must be pulled and the beds turned before the ground freezes, and most of the flowers were still in bloom. The flowers also need to be removed before they go to seed to insure that the planting of the gardens of the next spring won’t be interrupted by unplanted flowers. Pulling up the flowers can make one feel a little sad, but to make the gardens grow beautifully it is part of the process. All of our volunteers are always enthusiastic about the hard work; that is not a problem. It is the quizzical look from an occasional jogger passing by that can sometimes be a little difficult!

Many thanks for a job well done by all of our volunteers! The beds were turned again this year in record time!
